Blog Jump Start!

Ive decided to have another go at the world of blogging. I let my last posts slip, only delivering 2 in total, but after an inspiring talk from both my tutor and a blog expert I decided to revive my blog!

I found the blogging process extremely daunting to tell the truth. Is what I have to say worth listening to? Ive given myself the focus of PR from my perspective, as a first year just learning about the business, so do forgive me if what I say is a load of rubbish, Im still learning alot!

The first thing I thought I should try and discuss is my ever near deadline for my portfolio! Although I have a few items for this so far, there are a few which Im beginning to get stressed about. One of these is a press release for a real client. I need to therefore get experience with a company who will allow a first year student to have an attempt at writing one! Proving difficult!

The other item is an event! In my head I can think of a hundred things Id love to do as an event but in practice I find it quite difficult on a budget with limited resources. But other students are managing! Me and my classmate Sam have decided to get into gear and tackle this portfolio item together! Two creative, eager minds at work should prove more productive than one! So far we have come up with the idea of organising a PR social at the SU bar for all years of PR students to come together and network! Ill let you know how we get on with developing this idea and hopefully making it a reality!

Confused!

Am I doing the right degree to get into PR?
Im doing a straight BA PR degree at a recognised university by the CIPR so surely i chose the best route into the PR proffession? Perhaps not!
Some employers say they would prefer for graduates entering the proffession to have an English or History degree for stronger writing styles, claiming PR courses are too theory based. But I ask myself, what does Shakespeare have to do with PR?
In my course we write all the time and we practise writing the essential tools for PR such as press releases! Writing is a key part to my modules as well as business aspects and yes there is theory!
(Am I just ranting again?)
We had this debate in one of my classes so I thought I would put the debate to fellow PR students to see if they felt the same way about this situation!

I am a university fresher and now a blog fresher!
So far I am more than enjoying university life. I love my PR course and my new city of Leeds! However there have already been a few things that are bugging me about the reputation of PR degrees and students in the subject! So I would like to do some reputation management!

Many people think that PR students are niave and think solely about the glamorous side to the proffession but they are generalising! Im sure that many people in the lecture hall are thinking about meeting celebrities and the parties but not all of us are doing the degree for that. I, as many of my fellow students, realise the hard work and long hours and stresses of PR and are already feeling some of this pressure with a lingering portfolio to complete!

If any other PR students out there have had this said to them then feel free to join the rant!
(I promise not all my future blogs will be rants)
